What is adoption? When most people think of adoption they think of the person that cannot have a child and wants to adopt a child from either a private party or a foster care home. If this is what you are thinking then you are completely right. However, there is a more common and faster form of adoption in Louisiana. That form of adoption is known as an intra-family adoption and/or step-parent adoption.
This type of adoption generally takes place when a family member or a step-parent wish to adopt the child from a biological parent. The most common form of this is a stepfather that has married the mother of a child and the biological father is no longer in the picture for one reason or another.
A second example would be a grandparent or a sister/brother adopting a child from a sibling. The reasons for this vary and are truly based on the individual circumstances of each family.
The next question parties generally have when adopting a child in an intra-family adoption is time?
How long does it take? In Louisiana, you can normally fulfill an adoption in 60 days if all of the circumstances are smooth. Meaning there are no hiccups in the process. However, this is not always the case. In the court process, you must always allow for problems to arise. Especially now that the court system is dealing with COVID or COVID related illnesses.
